Monitoring

The media box has some basic monitoring tooling setup and I send that data to grafana cloud and have a nice little dashboard.

Making sure the MediaBox is robust and reliable is pretty important as I don’t want to promise me toddler an episode of Peppa Pig only for the media box to be down - that would be carnage.

Grafana Alloy

I use Grafana Alloy to send metrics to Grafana.

The config can be found at /etc/alloy/config.alloy.

I use the prometheus.exporter.unix to send basic hardware metrics (cpu, mem, disk, netdev (bandwidth)).

Under prometheus.exporter.unix I also send systemd info on specific services to I can track if they are active or stopped (e.g. jellyfin.service|alloy.service|vncserver@1.service|syncthing@tobias.service|AdGuardHome.service).

I use prometheus.exporter.blackbox to send network check metrics by periodically pinging 8.8.8.8 so I can see when/if internet connection drops.

I also send the JellyFin logs via loki to Grafana.

As the services and complexity of the media box grows the config/metrics I send will grow with it so the above may not be a complete list of what I’m monitoring. Check /etc/alloy/config.alloy to get the latest true picture.
